Households in Devon throw away approx. 351,000 tonnes of waste every single year – this includes ‘rubbish’, food waste and recycling.

Around 54% of this is recycled, which is great news, until you realise that approx. 163,000 tonnes of rubbish still needs to be disposed of – that’s the equivalent of over 25,000 African Elephants!

Waste in Devon used to be put into landfills – big holes in the ground. Now rubbish put in black bins is burnt in energy from waste plants, recovering energy from the rubbish and providing electricity homes and businesses can use.

You can also find out more about litter – this is rubbish that has been dropped or blown away and does not ended up in the proper waste and recycling systems. Litter can be very harmful to our natural environment.

Facts about Rubbish

41% (by weight) of the average Devon dustbin was recyclable materials that should have been put in the recycling bins or boxes. This could save approx. £3.9 million!

Waste Data

Every year every single decimal point of a tonne of council collected waste is measured and reported to our government. This means we have excellent data available to track the story of waste in Devon.

In the pie charts below you can see how EfW has almost replaced  landfill in the treatment of Devon’s rubbish over the last 10 years.
